There was a fweaky little SoundCloud drop that detonated the entire notion of what a pop music album could be: MILEY CYRUS AND HER DEAD PETZ.

Unleashed on a full moon in Pisces, after a chaotic VMAs, August 30, 2015, Dead Petz was a self-released surprise drop amid the fallout of Bangerz.

Teaming up with Wayne Coyne of the Flaming Lips, Miley shed the shell of Bangerz-era bad girl and took us on a raw, trippy, grief-streaked, deeply horny spiritual odyssey.

It was messy. It was mournful. It was Miley being Miley, in the most primal and earnestly artistic way she had ever been expressed.

Messy, raucous, introspective, and downright confessional, Dead Petz is a cosmic journey of creation, death, spirit animals, Tibetan bowls, space dudes, 15-minute orgasms, astral highs, and psychedelic comedowns.

You’re not supposed to make your magnum opus about your dead dogs, your coyote gangstalkers, your dead cat, your f*ckboi stoner deadbeat boyfriend, your uhh “slab of butter,” your possibly dead seahorse, or your really bad salvia trip—but it’s just Miley bein’ Miley: a self-created work of pop art in her own right.
