RADIO ICE REGGAE ONE is a two-part promotional DJ mix series by DJ POOLHOUSE, created to introduce the world of ARCTIC SUNSPLASH and showcase the sound of ice reggae in motion. Built around my debut full-length album with Jacquesques “Jah KK” Fröszt, the series includes Poolside Dub Version and Arctic Dub Command, two short, high-energy mixtape-style DJ sets designed as fast, fun transmissions from the frozen dancehall. Across the mixes, you’ll hear original tracks from Arctic Sunsplash, selections from my previous mixtape JAH WON’T PAY THE TAX MAN, plus unreleased covers, alternate mixes, previews, and dubby machine-art fragments from the wider Jah KK universe. San Francisco, CA — BACKKLASH Communications announces the release of Arctic Sunsplash, the debut full-length ice reggae project from DJ POOLHOUSE presents Jacquesques “Jah KK” Fröszt. Available June 21 on major streaming and download platforms, the album also arrives as a full visual experience, with visualizers for every song in the YouTube playlist edition.

Arctic Sunsplash is a 17-song album package (a 16 track song cycle, plus a bonus encore track). Across the record, DJ POOLHOUSE and his cybernetic auto-fictional icestafari alter ego Jacquesques “Jah KK” Fröszt open a musical portal to a frozen tropical world of digital dub, lovers rock, dancehall, ska, electro-pop, disco, trip-hop, garage, rave-ragga, sea-shanty camp, and machine-age pop ritual.

Ice reggae is the guiding language: a musical mythology that brings the Arctic to the tropics and the tropics to the Arctic. At its center is the union of contradiction: ice and heat, dub and pop, machine and heart, sadness and dance, body and spirit, black and white, sacred and absurd.

“Arctic Sunsplash is a love letter for, by, and from the invincible summer of my heart,” says DJ POOLHOUSE. “It’s a ceremonial pop-art ritual, an esoteric sound-system excursion, and the actual coordinates to a realm located on the plane of the creative imaginary. I used the tools available to me to translate what was written inside my heart and reflect it back into the world. That’s art.”

The album is also a deliberate machine-art project. Synthetic tools, including AI-generated vocals, beats, and visual elements, were used in its creation, but always in service of a larger artistic vision: a full pop-dub universe composed, directed, edited, sequenced, and mythologized by DJ POOLHOUSE.

“This is what I call machine art,” says DJ POOLHOUSE. “Yes, AI tools were part of the process. But the album and its visual companions were created from my heart. The technology helped me bring a musical vision to life beyond the means previously available to me. I’m happy to discuss the techniques and methods behind the record, but first I ask listeners to consider it as a work of dance pop, as a love letter to Jamaican studio science, and as an experiment in whether so-called ‘AI music’ can be pushed beyond the designation of slop.”

The album was created through a hybrid process: original demos, loops, melodies, lyrics, and vocal ideas were composed into a corpus of demonstration recordings, then brought into generative tools, reworked, edited, spliced, extended, and massaged into full LP mixes. The end result is Arctic Sunsplash, a landmark sonic recording that treats the machine — in the form of the studio, synthetic sound, dub chambers, and AI workspaces — as a technical collaborator.

“Pop music only exists because of the instruments of modern technology that allow it to be recorded, distributed, and produced,” says DJ POOLHOUSE. “All pop music is electronic music in the sense that it proliferates through technological mediums. Voices go through machines. Guitars go through machines. Samples, synthesizers, drum machines, DAWs, compressors, tape, mastering chains — this is already the language of modern music. My process is legitimate. I made strong demos, brought them into the machine, directed the performances, built the tracks, edited the takes, and made the album I first heard and saw inside myself.”

Poolhouse’s ice reggae concept is part retconned genre, part theoretical pop praxis. Its thesis is simple: Jamaican studio technique — dub science — sits at the heart of contemporary pop music. From disco to rap to house to EDM, the aftershocks of dub have shaped the very manner in which modern music gets made. “Ice reggae” celebrates the occulted Jamaican roots latent within modern pop forms, while also describing what Poolhouse calls “non-domestically produced Jamaican styles,” or, more simply, “when pop goes reggae.”

Poolhouse traces the term linguistically to the 1990s, citing Ace of Base and their reputed description of their own blue-eyed reggae-pop style as “China reggae,” presumably meaning a kind of knockoff or foreign-made reggae variant. Arctic Sunsplash embraces that strange lineage and refracts it through dub, dancehall, lovers rock, ska, electro-pop, rave, visual art, and machine production.

“This is an ice reggae record, not a reggae record,” says Poolhouse. “In many ways, each song is a jumping-off point for its own mutant variant on dub.”

That eclecticism becomes immediately apparent with “SNORKELVISION,” a mystical disco-dub initiation in which the sacred snorkel mask reveals the Arctic Sunsplash world. From there, “FREEZIN’” leans into an electro-pop, hip-hop, and neo-lovers-rock hybrid, a sound further explored on cuts like “THE DUB I HAD” and “BACKK IN2 UR LOVE.” “ICYY HOTT” ignites a frenetic breakbeat rave-ragga frozen dancefloor inferno, “BELSHAZZAR” offers a synth-drenched throwback to mid-century calypso and vintage Jamaican forms, while “ANGELS IN FLIP FLOPS” connects gloomy goth, haunted surf atmosphere, and a sinister beach-town mythology back to dubwise roots.

By the time the album enters its dance-oriented second half, it travels from the dancehalltronic, KLF-inspired megabop “TOWER BABELTR0N (TAKE ME)” to the angular high-NRG stomp of “POLAR BEACH” and the delirious gay rasta disco-dub sea shanty romp “BIMINI BITCH.”

While the record moves through many styles, it remains anchored by themes of the creative imaginary, mystical encounters with the unknown, the uniting or synthesizing of opposites, celebrations of creation’s splendor, ritual devotion to the cosmic order, and the intricate inner world of DJ POOLHOUSE — a self-identified Garbologyst, “high priest of the trash,” and Arctic dub commander.

Sonically, its course is charted by the influence of Jamaican sound-system culture and studio science. Dub, ska, dancehall, lovers rock, reggae-pop, and the aftershocks of Jamaican production run through the album, even when the sound veers into electro-pop, alt-rock, rave, or cinematic dance music.

The result is a maximal, melodic, infectious, highly engaging, and deeply strange pop album: a beach party at the edge of the world, a frozen lovers-rock mating ritual, a machine-assisted dub exegesis, and a visual-audio resort designed to host the imagination, built from ecstatic contradiction.

DJ Poolhouse introduces JAH WON’T PAY THE TAX MAN, an original “ice reggae” mixtape released under his Icestafarian alter ego, Jah “KK” Fröszt, from BACKKLASH Communications.

Dropping April 23, 2026, the project marks his first complete body of original ice reggae music, following a series of DJ-led mixtapes and earlier singles.

Built through an intricate machine-art process in collaboration with BRUISEFI.IST, the album is composed entirely from self-produced reggae instrumentals that were re-sampled, reconstructed, and layered into a dense digital dub sound. Atop these original compositions, Poolhouse adds melodies and rhymes, further defining “ice reggae,” or dub-influenced studio recordings produced by artists non-native to the islands.

The result is a fresh, genre-bending contribution to the emerging ice reggae canon—experimental in its construction, yet highly accessible as a collection of standalone pop works.

With standout tracks ranging from the more traditional, dancehall-inflected “KISS MI RING TING” and “POOLMAN,” to the giddy, ska-inflected dance-pop of “JUKE JOINT JAH” and “TACO BELL DANCEHALL,” alongside the title track “JAH WON’T PAY THE TAX MAN,” the mixtape blends hypnotic rhythms, playful cultural references, and a distinct sonic identity rooted in dub, dancehall, and machine-driven production.

Track #1: ICE AGE DUB (JAH JAH IS COMING)

The tape kicks off with some powerful 80s digital dancehall inspired, dub-saturated pop maximalism. An awe-inspiring cut which borders on ragga gospel, sets the spiritual tone at the heart of Jah KK’s message.

Poolhouse: This was the first cut I recorded for this project using my proprietary BRUISEFI.IST technology. We had been dabbling in some ‘ice reggae’ remixes for our other project, Phat Dunk. For the ice reggae project, I wanted to see if I could collaborate with the machines to make something that felt truly transcendent. I wanted to see if I could create sounds that moved the Spirit. I wanted the listener to feel how I felt when Jah the Most Chill, the spiritual patron of ice reggae, first spoke to me from the bottom of a my frozen-over gravity bong…. I think the results speak for themselves.

Track #2: POOLMAN

Dub techno fusion meets a digital rocksteady bop, lightly crisped and served with a side of cocky dancehall swagger, poolside under moonlight. A digital dub raison d'être of sorts.

Poolhouse: There’s a little bit of Lee Perry sprinkled in here, but it’s also so Poolhouse. This one sounds like how much fun we were having. I’m obsessed with using the conceptual frameworks of ‘ice reggae’ as a means for advancing my own mythos and spirituality. The so-called '2 K’ magic, my ability to ‘enhance the trance,’ these are esoteric skills which can only really be transmitted to the initiated through abstract forms. I began to see that I could teach the audience more through a 2 minute incomprehensible melody than I could through a carefully scripted hour’s long lecture.

Track #3: JAH WON’T PAY THE TAX MAN

Hot, wet, and shiny like a tropical sunshower, the mixtape’s titular cut does not cease to delight – a synthblast of upbeat 80s riddims and hooks, shrouded in mythos and mystery thanks to that Poolhouse touch. Ice reggae Deluxe.

Poolhouse: “I cut a very shitty demo version of this myself back during the original ICE REGGAE ONE mixtape sessions. It really sucks! Machine art rules because BRUISEFI.IST and I were absolutely able to nail the vision I had: a DJ POOLHOUSE dancehall theme as iconic as Inner Circle’s “Bad Boys’ [the theme from TV’s COPS]. My dad was a cop and I grew up watching COPS and honestly that is probably the biggest or most impactful reggae record on my life, the first one I could identify with, ironically. But here, we flip it – Poolie (The Fax Man) and Jah team up for the resistance to the mysterious twin towers of tytanny: the Tax Man, and the Axe Man. “you put your name on the line, but you never signed!” – quite possibly the truest shit I ever said, if you can clock it.”

Track #4: KISS MI RING TING

Dubbed out digital reggae bass blasted plate with a hint of eurodance lilt and ice king of di dancehall swagger.

Poolhouse: “Everybody wants to be Yellowman. Literally. Meryl Streep. Donald Trump. Jojo Siwa. Iggy Pop. They all wanna be Yellowman at the end of the day. He is such a legend and a king. I needed to do a record with a lot of swagger and innuendo, and I knew I wanted to call it ‘Kiss Mi Ring Ting.’ When I came up with ‘you can kiss more than the ring / when you kneel before the king’

Track #5: TACO BELL DANCEHALL

A rubbery digital dub synthpop banger of a ballad about a love that made a run for the border.

Poolhouse: Bruisefist and I created a bunch of reggae instrumentals that served as source material for a lot of the sounds on this this mixtape. I had this very ruberry, cantina flavored casiotone dancehall demo that I titled “Taco Bell Dance Hall” on a whim. As soon as I wrote that down, I was like..dammit..that is so damn perfect, but now I am gonna have to make sure this shit is a HIT. I knew I wouldn’t allow myself to settle for anything less! Let’s just say.. I did not let myself down ;)"

Track #6: JUKE JOINT JAH

Ska-infused electro dancehall rave-up. With pop punk tenencies. An ice cold bopper.

Poolhouse: This one came together really quickly – it actually came from the Phat Dunk sessions [for LORD LOVE A DUNK]. Some of the lyrics are so absurd, but the most ridiculous ones ended up sounding the best. I wanted to make something that was kind of like these old Tommie Sunshine remixes of Fallout Boy that I love, but like, make it ice reggae. It ended up being that but also something kind of new wave, and also something that is honestly kind of uncanny and singular!

Track #7: IBERIAN MYSTERY

Misty and mystic, this standout track shimmers with 90s eurobeat ‘ice reggae’ sparkle, but one fully submerged in the doom-soaked, ominous rumble of the dub tradition. An ice reggae classic.

Poolhouse: I love this one. I am really proud of how this one turned out, it really is one I was able to turn from a voice note into exactly what I heard in my mental vision of the record. I am really influenced by Ace of Base – probably the ultimate ice reggae band (although they had their own term for it – “China reggae” lol!). This is another one where I titled this demo “Iberian Mystery.” I didn’t really think about what it meant at the time. But it was another one where I knew I needed to write a song called that. So we worked this cool, trip hop sounding demo into like, Snow meets Ace of Base. This is one is ice reggae canon for sure. We did it, Joe.”

Track #8: CUNANAN DUB

A digital dub gothic soaked in a sinister rocksteady skank.

Poolhouse: “The dub instrumental this is based on, it had this gloomy tropical vibe…it was sort of South Florida but make it goth. So when I tried to define that vibe conceptually, ‘Andrew Cunanan’ came to me instantly. The ultimate archetype of Miami vice, danger..evil. I honestly don’t know what came over me. But I did feel very moved. I believe Jah wished for me to show this darkness at this point in the mixtape very intentionally. So I read a Miami Herald article about Cunanan’s arrest from the day it happened in 1997, then wrote the lyrics quickly. I did try to get into the killer’s head a little, but I deliberately made sure it wasn’t too catchy. A banger hook wouldn’t feel right here.”

Track #9: E. 1999 GHOSTLY RD.

A haunting, maximalist dub-revival ballad over a slippery dubstep riddim to bring the mixtape’s journey to a close marked by yearning and wonder.

Poolhouse: “The ghostly road is the road of Time. And we do ultimately traverse it alone. But maybe if you have the latest mixtape by Jah KK Fröszt, then the journey isn’t so bad!”

There are four working definitions for this retconned genre, which was created in the spirit of one love, one world harmony.

Global Reggae Production
Reggae made outside Jamaica — from Iceland to China. Cold-climate riddims, tropical soul.

Reggae Pop Crossovers & Pop Flirtation with Jamaican Sonic Elements:
When pop puts on the Rasta wig so to speak — dancehall beats, island flavor, or reggae/dub-style remixes. Ace of Base. Dabblings by Nelly Furtado, Nicki Minaj, Drake etc. SNOW (hello!). Carly Simon’s Paradise Garage banger - “Why.”

Or, when “Island music” goes international - Shaggy hits, Rihanna “Pon di Replay” (and I feel her Rated R LP is even more so a definitively ice reggae piece); and other iconic entries from the reggae / dancehall / dub etc.

Dub DNA
Dub science is at the root of modern studio pop production. Everything from hip hop to EDM to top 40 productions contain Jamaican dub wizardry into their sonic archietcure. Thus, “ice reggae” can conceivably be any any music demonstrating an influence of Jamaican studio technique — echo, delay, bass, and sound system roots (this would, by definition, include all of reggae in “ice reggae”!).

Locating the “dub DNA” in recordings allows us to use “ice reggae” to make new connnections in sound (and also represents a praxis of Poolhousean Product Theory – more to come)

Ice Reggae Edits
Fan-made reggae/dub remixes of pop songs, created in the playful, global spirit of ice reggae, represents the emergent fourth pillar of our ice reggae pop art contagion.

DJ POOLHOUSE ON THE ARTISTIC INSPIRATIONS AND REVELATIONS OF ICE REGGAE (Redux)

Hi! Thanks for listening to my inaugural second ICE REGGAE set! This was truly inspired by a vision one night last winter, after my gravity bong froze over inside my in-laws’ garage. I was touched by the Borean Breath of Jah the Most Chill, and given an Icestafari name: JAH “KK” FRÖSZT, Prince of Ice Reggae.

ICE REGGAE ONE is ultimately my way of expressing joyous gratitude to our Creator and sharing the blessed revelation of Ice Reggae with anyone willing to receive it—through these delightful dub plates, expertly selected and mixed with the love and care of a painter or a nuclear scientist.

Musically, dub culture and Jamaican music are the foundation of my vision. I enjoy tracing the recursive influence of dub techniques through popular music and celebrating this aspect of the Afro-Euro musical language, which has enriched countless lives and cultures around the world. Ice Reggae is not merely a celebration of “white meets Black,” but a restoration of the Hyperborean spirit that is sparked when men come together and reshape the culture through creative partnership.

As an artist, I view Ice Reggae as a highly refined creative thoughtform for the culture to consume. It is a retroactively constructed musical genre, a fashion style, an attitude, a gnostic faith. Ice Reggae is conceptually built on music, history, mysticism, syncretic creativity, and a future-forward embrace of tradition: the Jamaican music tradition, the pop and club traditions, the tradition of the obscure priests of Dub science and the apocryphal texts of the electrical wizards and gadgeteers of the radio age, and the companion tradition of the brotherhood of Anglo and American fanboys who revered and preserved the glory of dub’s beauty.

This brings me to another inspiration for this mix: ‘90s compilation CD culture, which brought the millennial generation under the spellbinding influence of dub. Specifically, the treasured Soul Jazz Records (where my fellow 300% Dynamite! uncs at??) that collected rare Jamaican classics.

2 Many DJ’s seminal “As Heard on Radio Soulwax Vol. 2” is the ultimate touchstone for all of my mixes; I could only dream of ever capturing a sliver of their mixtape magic. Finally, the third source of inspiration in this late 90s/Y2K electronica triumvirate is this sick series of downtempo comps called The Chill Out Album (specifically volumes 1 & 2) from Telstar TV, who I feel are sort of like the pop-archivists at Rhino Records but for the UK. The 90s were the golden age of the (very very expensive) imported genre compilation disk and the learned geeks & archivist, who were its champions.

The treasure trove of esoteric and leftfield downtempo gems found on Chill Out Album Vol. 1 first sparked my love for dub and electronica in the ‘90s. I picked up a copy of the slim blue double-disc CD (with the deep blue lava lamp cover art) at the Virgin Megastore in Union Square on a visit to downtown San Francisco. This was when I was probably a freshman in high school. It blew my mind. I didn’t do drugs as a teen, so hard techno and pure underground dance music revered by my raver peers didn’t interest me back then. Too raw, underground.

Chill Out Album revealed a colorful, mysterious world of dub, trip hop, glossy electronica and obscure ancient funk and exotica. That Saint Etienne record changed my life. Suddenly it was like, wtf I love electronic music and Neil Young now! It was at least a decade old when I discovered it, but its magnificent allure and spacey dubwise house still entices new listeners to this day.

Just hearing those breezy synth riffs as it plays back on my monitor, I can practically smell the hot wet dance floor at one of my old haunts, Popscene, where this record would delight the crowd at 330 Ritch in SOMA, where pop geeks with skinny ties and pencil skirts and other assorted dub-inflected mod larpers gathered to simulate 1989 Manchester once a week.

But now I’m starting to geezer out, so I’ll wrap this press release up before I start bitching about how that Virgin Megastore is now just another empty big-box husk downtown!
